In 1924 Lana'i City was conceived by the Dole Pineapple company. It was a model town, incorporating all of the social necessities needed for pineapple production. In the early 1980s, the industry began to crash and the island turned to tourism. Luxury resorts were added as well as championship golf courses. Ancient Hawaiians inhabited this area from the 15th Century until the late 1800's. Remains of the earth that eroded away from the cliffs can be seen as small islands and rock outcroppings off shore. Often tidepools are seen in these areas where the lava lies just below the surface of the water and is partially exposed during low tide.

Kaumalapau Harbor: Lanai - Hawaii

In the Leeward area. Kaumalapau Harbor can be found on the west coast of the Hawaiian Island of Lanai and has earned the reputation as being the island's main harbor. The scenic harbor, surrounded by wide bluffs and jagged cliffs, is the point form which the majority of ships and fishing vessels leave. The establishment of this harbor came about during the time when the pineapple industry was still the island's main trade and fruit was being exported atmosphere with only the odd fisherman every now and again walking along the harbor wharf.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lanai-island-hawaii.blogspot.com/2008/07/kaumalapau-harbor-lanai-hawaii.html' title='Kaumalapau Harbor: Lanai -
